James West is a Self-taught, well rounded, professional tattoo artist who started his career about a decade ago! He enjoys doing neo traditional & black and grey realism tattoos. While in Texas on vacation he landed an apprenticeship at a studio under the owner. The owner was mainly a piercer, and was always busy. So, James took it upon himself to study the other artist, read forums online, and watch countless hours of videos of other tattoo artists tattooing. Shortly after they had him tattooing friends of the shop. They saw how quick he picked up tattooing and had him doing small walk-in pieces. After about a year, he came back to Illinois where he’s continued his tattooing career.
“So, I didn’t have your typical tattooing apprenticeship. Honestly, I had no real plans of becoming a tattoo artist, I literally just got lucky while on a trip visiting family. But I’m grateful it happened and I’m proud of myself. I got myself to this point in my tattooing career by teaching myself, while getting a few pointers on the way. I can’t wait to see what I’m able to tattoo another decade from now.”
